THE STUDY Team B (2025)
A brighter future for women in STEM: closing the gender gaps in engineering by focusing on youth education.
The Study by Team B was awarded the VOOC 2025 Third Prize of $1,500. Additionally, the team received a Jury Mention for the project with the highest potential in reducing gender gaps in STEM education.
Under the supervision of their teacher Ms. Liogas and their Mentor Ms. Gariépy -Bill, the Team composed of Elia Sierra Veill, Joumana Bendjedid, Devyn Handa, and Sophie Mendelsohn carried an investigation on gender gaps in the Engineering field where evidence indicate lack of early exposure and insufficient experiential learning as barriers to enter the profession.
Their proposed solution is a restructuration of the national curriculum to include a mandatory interdisciplinary technology course for students from kindergarten to grade 11. This course will focus on feminist pedagogy, experiential and project-based learning, and the inclusion of topics like robotics, programming, and circuit design. The goal is to provide young girls with early, engaging exposure to STEM, break down stereotypes, and ultimately, foster a new generation of female engineers.
