R.E. Mountain Secondary School Team A (2025)
Lack of representation influences accessible education for women in STEM.
The R.E. Mountain Secondary School, Team A was awarded the VOOC 2025 Fourth prize ex-aequo of $1,000, with a Jury Mention for Best project promoting access to STEM Education.
Under the supervision of their teacher Mr. Exume, and mentor Ms. Yu, the team composed of Gabriela Bezede, Mehgan Sandhu, and Asher Gutierrez investigated the gender gaps in the field of computer science. Current evidence suggests that limited mentorship, financial barriers, and psychological biases were at the root of women’s lack of representation in that field.
Their proposed solution "HerConnection," is a dynamic digital platform designed to empower young women to pursue careers in STEM through three offerings: (1) Mentorship, (2) Financial Aid, and a (3) Facilitation Hub.
